Transmission Troubleshooting & Symptoms
Can I keep driving with a slipping transmission?
No, not for long. A slipping automatic generates heat, and heat destroys the clutch packs and breaks down the fluid protecting them. A fault that is a fluid-and-solenoid repair this week can become a full rebuild within days of continued driving. Stop driving it and get it looked at.
Call 022 472 4444 — we can arrange a tow if it is not safe to drive.
Why does my car hesitate before it moves off?
A delay of a second or two before the car engages, worst first thing in the morning, usually points to low or degraded transmission fluid, or a worn solenoid. Cold fluid is thicker, which is why it shows up on winter mornings first. It is an early symptom and a cheap one to catch.
Book a free diagnosis this week rather than next.
What does a burning smell from my transmission mean?
It means the fluid is overheating, and that is urgent. Transmission fluid that smells scorched has stopped protecting the internals, so every further kilometre is doing damage. It can also indicate fluid leaking onto the exhaust, which is a fire risk. Do not keep driving it.
Ring us before you start the car again — 022 472 4444.
Why does my car shudder at 70 km/h?
A shudder at a steady cruise, typically between 60 and 80 km/h, most often comes from the torque converter lock-up clutch rather than the gearbox itself. That is good news, because a torque converter can be repaired or replaced without rebuilding the whole transmission. It needs diagnosing before it worsens.

Is a transmission fluid leak serious?
Yes. Automatic transmission fluid is red or reddish-brown, and it pools under the middle of the car rather than the front. A small weep caught early is usually a seal or gasket, and a straightforward fix. Left alone, the fluid level drops, the transmission overheats, and it becomes a rebuild.
Get it checked free before it turns into the expensive version.
Do I need a new gearbox or just a service?
Usually just a service, or a single component. We work through the possibilities cheapest first: fluid and filter, then solenoids, then the valve body, then the torque converter, and only then the clutch packs and gear sets that make it a rebuild. Most cars stop at step one or two.
Call us and we’ll establish which step yours is at, free.
Maintenance Frequency
How often should an automatic transmission be serviced?
Every 40,000 to 60,000 kilometres for most vehicles, and sooner if you tow, carry loads or sit in heavy stop-start traffic. Heat is what ages the fluid, so Auckland commuting is harder on a transmission than open-road driving. Condition matters more than the interval on the sticker.
Book a fluid condition check at Mt Wellington or Mt Roskill.
How often should a CVT be serviced?
More often than a conventional automatic — commonly every 40,000 kilometres, and some manufacturers specify less. Fluid condition is the single largest factor in how long a CVT lasts. If you bought a used Japanese import with no service history, assume it is overdue and have it checked.
Call either branch to book a CVT fluid service.
Does a BMW ZF 8-speed need a transmission fluid change?
Yes, despite being marketed as sealed for life. In practice that fluid degrades like any other, and a great many of these gearboxes in New Zealand have never had it changed. A fluid and pan service at sensible intervals markedly extends the life of the unit.

Does a warrant of fitness check the gearbox?
No. A WOF covers safety items — brakes, tyres, lights, steering and structure — and explicitly excludes the condition of the engine, clutch, gearbox and differential. A current WOF is not evidence that your transmission is healthy. Have the driveline checked separately, once a year or before a long trip.
Our lead engineer is a WOF-authorised inspector — call to book a driveline check.
Service Specifics
Can a CVT be rebuilt?
Often, yes — despite what many owners are told. If the fault is caught before the belt and pulleys are damaged, a CVT can be repaired rather than replaced as a complete unit. Once the belt has scored the pulleys the economics change. Early diagnosis is what preserves the cheaper option.
Call us about your CVT before assuming it needs replacing.
Can you repair a DSG mechatronic unit?
Yes. Jerky low-speed shifting, a flashing gear display or a refusal to engage on a VW, Audi or Škoda DSG usually points to the mechatronic unit rather than the clutches. We repair these and carry out the adaptation and calibration the car requires afterwards, which is not optional.

Do you repair Eaton Fuller truck gearboxes?
Yes. We service and rebuild Eaton Fuller manual boxes and Allison automatics, and we work on Hino, Isuzu and Fuso drivelines. We schedule around your Certificate of Fitness window and tell you up front how many days we need the vehicle.
Call the hotline on 027 734 4445 to arrange fleet work.
How long does a transmission rebuild take?
Usually between three to five working days. A fluid service is same-day. A solenoid or valve body repair is usually quicker than a rebuild, and we confirm the timeframe in writing with the quote rather than leaving you guessing.
Call either branch for a timeframe on your vehicle.
Local & Trust
Which Galeeco branch should I take my car to?
Whichever is closer. Mt Wellington is at 65 Leonard Road, handy to Sylvia Park, Panmure, Ellerslie and Penrose. Mt Roskill is at 87 Carr Road, close to Three Kings, Hillsborough, Onehunga and New Windsor. Work done at one branch is backed at the other.
Call Mt Wellington on 022 472 4444 or Mt Roskill on 022 567 2249.
Will you tell me before doing any extra work?
Always. You get a written quote before we open anything, and if we find something else we stop and ring you rather than adding it to the bill. Under New Zealand consumer law you are not liable for work you did not approve, and we would rather not be relying on that.

Our
Services
Oil changes are one of the most important services to keep your vehicle on the road. One of the quickest and easiest services you can do to care for your vehicle is an oil change.
At our local auto repair shop, we have performed countless oil changes for our valued customers. Regularly performed oil changes ensure that your engine is not being forced to work overtime through dirty oil in order to run.
Diagnosing the Issue
Every manufacturer has different recommendations as to how often and at what mileage you should have your oil change done. Check your owner’s manual for the exact mileage your car’s maker recommends and don’t allow that mileage to pass without getting it done.
Neglecting an oil change will result in causing stress and unnecessary wear on your engine, which could cause it to stop running well before its time. Replacing an entire engine is a very costly repair to make as a result of failing to regularly change the oil.
