Mazda Diesel Repair Specialists — SkyActiv-D & CH5 Engine Experts Auckland
The Mazda 2.2L SkyActiv-D diesel engine — known in New Zealand workshops as the CH5 — is one of the most technically advanced diesel engines in its class. Introduced in 2012, it delivers outstanding fuel efficiency, low emissions and impressive performance. But like all sophisticated diesel engines, it requires specialist knowledge to diagnose and repair correctly.
The CH5 (SkyActiv-D 2.2L, internal code SH-VPTS) is found in:
- Mazda CX-5 (2012–present) — the most popular Mazda in New Zealand
- Mazda 6 (2012–present) — both sedan and wagon variants
This engine uses a twin-scroll turbocharger, piezo-injectors, a diesel particulate filter, an EGR system and — in later models — an AdBlue/SCR aftertreatment system. When any of these systems develop faults, generic diagnostic tools often fail to identify the root cause. Galeeco’s technicians use Mazda-compatible diagnostic equipment to read engine-specific fault codes and carry out accurate, efficient repairs.
The Mazda CH5 engine is the 2.2L SkyActiv-D diesel (code SH-VPTS) used in Mazda CX-5 and Mazda 6 vehicles sold in New Zealand from 2012 onwards. It is a sophisticated twin-turbo diesel requiring specialist diagnosis for DPF, EGR, injector and turbo faults.

Common Mazda Diesel Problems We Fix
DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) Clogging
The DPF is the most common maintenance issue on Mazda CX-5 and Mazda 6 diesel vehicles in New Zealand. The filter traps soot from diesel combustion and periodically burns it off through a process called regeneration. In urban driving — short trips, frequent stops — regeneration cannot complete, leading to a blocked DPF.
Symptoms of a blocked Mazda DPF:
- Dashboard DPF warning light
- Reduced engine power (“limp mode”)
- Increased fuel consumption
- Rough idle or difficulty starting
- Exhaust smoke
Galeeco’s Mazda DPF Solutions:
- Forced DPF regeneration — completed in-workshop using specialist equipment
- Physical DPF cleaning — removed, professionally cleaned and reinstalled
- DPF replacement — where cleaning is no longer viable
- Lifestyle assessment — advice on driving patterns to prevent recurring blockages
EGR Valve Carbon Buildup
The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve on the SkyActiv-D diesel is prone to carbon buildup, particularly on vehicles used predominantly for urban or short-distance driving. A clogged EGR valve causes:
- Rough idle, especially when cold
- Loss of power under load
- Engine warning light (fault codes P0400–P0409)
- Black smoke from exhaust
Galeeco cleans or replaces EGR valves using specialist tooling and Mazda-compatible diagnostics to ensure correct calibration after service.
Injector Faults and Fuel System Issues
The SkyActiv-D uses piezoelectric injectors that operate at extremely high pressure. These are precision components that require specialist diagnosis when they develop faults. Symptoms of injector issues include:
- Rough running or misfires
- White or blue smoke from exhaust
- Oil dilution (see below)
- Persistent fuel smell
- High fuel consumption
Warning: Incorrectly diagnosed injector faults can lead to unnecessary and expensive parts replacement. Galeeco always confirms injector faults with back-leakage and flow testing before recommending replacement.
Oil Dilution (Early SkyActiv-D Models — 2012–2015)
Early Mazda CX-5 and Mazda 6 SkyActiv-D engines (particularly pre-2016) had a known issue where fuel from the post-injection DPF regeneration process diluted the engine oil. This caused oil levels to rise above the maximum mark and significantly reduced oil viscosity and lubricating properties.
If you own a 2012–2015 Mazda CX-5 or Mazda 6 2.2L diesel, check your oil level regularly. Oil that smells of diesel is a strong indicator of dilution. Galeeco can assess the severity and advise on a management strategy.
Timing Chain Noise and Wear
While the SkyActiv-D uses a timing chain (not a belt), high-km units can develop chain rattle at cold start or under load. This is caused by worn tensioners or chain stretch and should not be ignored — a failed chain on this engine causes catastrophic valve-piston contact damage.
If you hear any rattling from the front of your Mazda diesel engine at cold start, contact us immediately for a diagnostic check. →
Turbocharger Faults
The twin-scroll turbocharger on the SkyActiv-D is durable but can suffer from:
- Oil feed restriction (caused by extended oil change intervals)
- Actuator failure (variable geometry vanes sticking)
- Compressor wheel damage (if oil dilution is severe)
Galeeco performs turbocharger inspections, actuator servicing and replacement at both Auckland workshops.

Frequently Asked Questions — Mazda Repairs Auckland
What is the CH5 engine in a Mazda?
The CH5 is a workshop shorthand for the Mazda 2.2L SkyActiv-D diesel engine (code SH-VPTS). It is a twin-turbo diesel found in the Mazda CX-5 (2012+) and Mazda 6 (2012+). It requires specialist diagnostic equipment for accurate fault finding — Galeeco is equipped for this.
What are the most common Mazda CX-5 diesel problems?
The most common issues are: DPF clogging (especially in urban driving), EGR valve carbon buildup, injector faults, oil dilution (early models), timing chain noise at higher km, and turbocharger actuator faults. All of these can be diagnosed and repaired at Galeeco.
How much does Mazda DPF cleaning cost in Auckland?
Forced regeneration in-workshop typically costs $350–$600. Professional physical DPF cleaning runs $400–$800. DPF replacement is $1,500–$3,000+ depending on whether OEM or quality equivalent parts are used. Galeeco will recommend the most cost-effective solution for your vehicle.
Can I service my Mazda at Galeeco without voiding my warranty?
Yes. Under New Zealand’s Consumer Guarantees Act, servicing at an independent MTA-approved workshop does not void your manufacturer’s warranty — provided manufacturer-specification parts and fluids are used. Galeeco meets these requirements.
Does Galeeco repair Mazda BT-50 diesel trucks?
Yes. The BT-50 uses a Ford-sourced Duratorq diesel engine (same as Ford Ranger). Galeeco is an experienced Ford and Mazda diesel specialist and services all BT-50 generations at both Auckland workshops.
Where in Auckland can I get my Mazda diesel repaired?
Galeeco has two Auckland workshops: Mt Wellington (65 Leonard Road, 022 472 4444) and Mt Roskill (87 Carr Road, 022 567 2249). Open 6 days — Mon–Fri 8am–5:30pm, Sat 9am–5pm. Book online at any time.
