How Does Insurance Cover Mechanical Repairs in NZ?
Mechanical breakdown insurance (MBI) is a policy that pays for the sudden failure of the mechanical and electrical parts it covers, such as an engine, gearbox or steering component. It’s separate from standard car insurance.
Standard car insurance covers damage from events such as an accident, fire, flood or theft, and that can include mechanical parts damaged in the event. It generally doesn’t cover breakdowns, general wear and tear, or servicing.
Every policy is different, so your policy wording decides what’s covered. Common exclusions include routine servicing, wear items such as brake pads and tyres, faults that existed before the policy started, and breakdowns that follow missed servicing. Your insurer makes the final call on any claim. Our job is to give them clear, accurate information and then repair your car properly.

How Insurance Mechanical Repairs Work at Galeeco
Every claim follows the same seven steps, so you always know what’s happening and what comes next.
Step 1: Tell Us About the Problem and Your Cover
Call us or book online and tell us what’s happened. Give us your insurer’s name and your policy number, and we’ll check what your policy requires before we start. Some policies direct you to an authorised repairer, so we confirm with your insurer first.
Step 2: We Investigate the Fault
Our technicians diagnose the problem properly, with a diagnostic scan, a road test and a hands-on inspection of the suspect system. If the cause can’t be found without opening up the engine or gearbox, we explain why and get your written authority first. Your insurer is told before any dismantling begins.
Step 3: We Assess and Report
We put the findings in a written report: what failed, the likely cause, which parts are involved, and whether it looks like a sudden failure or gradual wear, because insurers treat the two differently. We add photos, the odometer reading and any service records you’ve given us. Your insurer decides on cover, and we make sure they have the facts.
Step 4: We Quote the Repair
You get an itemised quote covering parts and labour, with parts options where your insurer allows them. We send it to your insurer and answer their assessor’s questions, so you don’t have to.
Step 5: Your Insurer Approves
Most policies need approval before work begins, and repairs started without it can be excluded from cover. We wait for your insurer’s approval, often in the form of an authorisation number, before we start the repair. If we find more damage once the car is apart, we ask for the extra approval before carrying on.
Step 6: We Repair It
Once approved, our technicians carry out the repair using genuine, OEM or quality aftermarket parts, whichever your insurer approves. We keep you updated along the way. If your insurer wants to inspect the failed parts, we hold on to them until they have.
Step 7: Test, Handover and Warranty
After the repair we road test the car and re-scan it to confirm the fault is gone. You pay your excess and anything your policy doesn’t cover, and where your insurer pays the workshop directly, we invoice them for the rest. Our mechanical repairs carry a 12-month / 20,000 km warranty.
Before You Bring Your Car In
A few things make a claim smoother. If you don’t have them all, bring what you have and we’ll help with the rest.
- Stop driving if you can. Many policies expect you to prevent further damage, and driving on can turn a covered repair into an excluded one. Your policy may include towing, so check before you call a tow truck.
- Your policy details. Bring your insurer’s name, your policy number and your policy schedule or booklet.
- Your service records. Many MBI policies ask for proof of servicing, so bring invoices, logbook stamps or WOF records.
- Your registration and odometer reading. Insurers usually ask for both when you make a claim.
- Any claim or authorisation number. If you’ve already spoken to your insurer, bring the number they gave you.

Insurance Mechanical Repair Questions, Answered
Does car insurance cover mechanical repairs in NZ?
Standard car insurance usually doesn’t cover mechanical breakdowns or wear and tear. It can cover mechanical damage caused by an insured event such as an accident, fire, flood or theft. Mechanical breakdown insurance (MBI) is the policy designed for sudden failures. Check your wording, or call 022 472 4444 and we’ll help you read it.
What is mechanical breakdown insurance (MBI)?
MBI is a separate policy that pays to repair the sudden failure of the mechanical and electrical parts it covers, such as the engine, gearbox or steering. It usually excludes servicing, wear items and pre-existing faults, and it often requires regular servicing. Autosure, AA Mechanical Breakdown, Provident, Janssen, Autolife, Assurant and VTNZ MBI are among the providers.
Can Galeeco repair my car under my insurance?
Yes. Galeeco Automotive is an MTA member and works with all NZ insurers and MBI providers. Some policies direct you to an authorised repairer or need approval first, so we confirm your insurer’s requirements before any work starts. Call 022 472 4444 or 022 567 2249 with your policy details.
Which insurance companies does Galeeco work with?
We work with all New Zealand insurers and MBI providers, including Autosure, AA Mechanical Breakdown, Provident Insurance, Janssen Insurance, Autolife, Assurant and VTNZ MBI. The full list is on this page, and if yours isn’t on it, give us a call.
Do I need approval from my insurer before repairs start?
Usually, yes. Most MBI policies need the insurer’s approval before work begins, and repairs started without it can be excluded. We send our report and quote to your insurer and wait for approval before starting. If we find extra faults once the car is apart, we ask for further approval first.
What will my insurer need from me?
Your insurer will usually ask for your policy number, registration, odometer reading and a claim form. For MBI claims they often want proof of servicing too, such as invoices, logbook stamps and WOF records. Bring what you have when you come in, and we’ll help you work out what’s missing.
Why might you need to take my engine or gearbox apart?
Sometimes the cause of a failure can’t be confirmed without dismantling. Only you can authorise that, and your insurer needs to know first. Policies treat the cost differently depending on whether the claim is accepted, so we explain how yours works and get your written go-ahead before we start.
What doesn’t insurance usually cover on a mechanical repair?
Routine servicing, wear items such as brake pads, tyres and batteries, faults that existed before the policy started, and breakdowns linked to missed servicing are common exclusions. Standard car insurance also excludes general wear and tear. Your policy wording has the final say.
Do I pay anything on an insurance mechanical repair?
You usually pay your policy excess, plus anything the policy doesn’t cover, when you collect the car. Your insurer pays the covered amount, either to us or back to you, depending on the policy. We’ll tell you what to expect before the work starts.
How long will an insurance repair take?
It depends on how long the investigation takes, how quickly your insurer approves the quote, and parts availability. We give you a timeframe once the assessment is done and tell you early if it changes. Ask your insurer whether your policy includes a rental car or towing.
Is the repair guaranteed?
Our mechanical repairs carry a 12-month / 20,000 km warranty, and we give you the terms in writing. Your insurer may also guarantee work done by its own authorised repairers, so ask what applies to your policy. Call 022 472 4444 or 022 567 2249 if you’d like to check before booking.
Should I keep driving a car with a mechanical fault?
No. Driving on can cause more damage, and many policies expect you to prevent further damage. Stop somewhere safe, check whether your policy includes towing, then call us. We’ll tell you the safest way to get the car to Mt Wellington or Mt Roskill.
